Today we had a wonderful time exploring and learning all about the history of Reader Rock Garden. The weather was perfect as we walked in the footsteps of history and discovers how William Reader collected and planted seeds in this amazing park from as far away as China. We also travelled through time starting in 1874 and learned about significant dates in history that affected the development of our City.  Our tour ended with a walk through the cemetery where we discovered the headstone of many prominent Albertans. Our knowledge gained today will be a wonderful springboard for more in-depth learning during the next few weeks about how our community emerged and grew into a vibrant city.

A warm thank you for our parents and grandparents who joined up today. We couldn't take part in these wonderful opportunities without your support.

As we continue to explore the history of Calgary the students were given some wonderful old photographs. Their job was to work together as a class and decide where they feel the photographs fit in on our timeline. When asked what were some clues that helped them decide the final location on our timeline they indicate the following; "If the picture is in color it must not be from that long ago" "I can tell by looking at the cars because we know they cars came to Calgary after the horse and buggies" "I can tell by looking at the powerlines because Calgary did not have electricity a long long time ago". Protecting our water source

Today we had a dynamic conversation about ways that we can protect our water source. The students have a lot to say and are very passionate about conserving this invaluable resource. Many of the children asked if I could send the video we watched to their parents. Welcome to grade one/two!

Hello and welcome to grade 1/2 room 8. I am so excited to have this communication tool available so that you are able to see what is happening in our classroom. Please feel free to share with me any ideas or suggestions that you may have that you feel you or your child may like to contribute to our learning. This will help to make further connections between home, our community and school. As the year progresses the students will be taking on a greater role in contributing to our blog. Today was a terrific first day. All of the students were super excited to dive right into their learning. Here are a few snapshots.
