Estimation



During the last few weeks, we have been talking a lot about estimation. The students have been using estimation to make a thoughtful guess regarding numbers. We have also discussed when we would use estimation in other situations. Here are some humorous quotes from the students;
-"My Dad did not do a very good job at estimating when he was making dinner, instead of putting in only one hot pepper he used three and our dinner was ruined!"
- When we went on a car ride this summer, my Dad didn't do a good job of estimating how far we were driving and how much gas we needed and we ran out. We needed to call a tow truck"!
-"If you don't do a good job of estimating the temperature outside when you get dressed you may not have warm enough clothes on."
"Sometimes we don't estimate properly how long it takes to walk to school and then we are late for the bell."

As we continue to explore the history of Calgary the students were given some wonderful old photographs. Their job was to work together as a class and decide where they feel the photographs fit in on our timeline. When asked what were some clues that helped them decide the final location on our timeline they indicate the following; "If the picture is in color it must not be from that long ago" "I can tell by looking at the cars because we know they cars came to Calgary after the horse and buggies" "I can tell by looking at the powerlines because Calgary did not have electricity a long long time ago". Welcome to grade one/two!

Hello and welcome to grade 1/2 room 8. I am so excited to have this communication tool available so that you are able to see what is happening in our classroom. Please feel free to share with me any ideas or suggestions that you may have that you feel you or your child may like to contribute to our learning. This will help to make further connections between home, our community and school. As the year progresses the students will be taking on a greater role in contributing to our blog. Today was a terrific first day. All of the students were super excited to dive right into their learning. Here are a few snapshots. Protecting our water source

Today we had a dynamic conversation about ways that we can protect our water source. The students have a lot to say and are very passionate about conserving this invaluable resource. Many of the children asked if I could send the video we watched to their parents.
